Cul2vators All Abuzz
Honey bees are an incredibly important part of our ecosystem. According to the American Bee Keeping Federation, approximately one-third of all the food Americans eat is directly or indirectly derived from honey bee pollination. One-third! Honey bees contribute nearly $20 billion to the value of U.S. crop production in the form of increased yields and superior quality crops for growers and American consumers.
The Nashville Area Beekeepers Association has hives on the hill that leads to the Cul2vate farm. We are thankful for their presence and the help they provide our crops. They were also kind enough to provide some training for our Cul2vators on honey bees and bee keeping. Take a look at their smiling faces!
Did you know? There are three members of a honey bee colony:
Queen: Mother to all the bees in the colony. Worker: An infertile female that performs the labor tasks of the colony including feed preparation, guarding the hive, feeding the queen, and more. Drone: The male that starts out as an unfertilized egg. Its only purpose in the colony is to create more bees with the queen.
Honey bees are an integral part of successful modern day farming. Thanks again to our local bee keepers for the lesson! Remember, if you have a swarm at your home, call your local beekeepers for safe removal and preservation!
