Ziggy

Meet one of our newest Cul2vators, Ziggy! We learned about his journey and his favorite things about farming in this interview. Read or watch it below and be on the lookout for part 2.

Please introduce yourself

I’m Zachary Lizama, also known as Ziggy, and I’m new to Cul2vate.

How did you come to Cul2vate?

Alright, how did I come to Cul2vate? Two months ago, I was released from prison. I was accepted to Men of Valor, and I did 30 days at Men of Valor, taking classes. I heard about several jobs they had to offer. I heard good and bad about most of the jobs, but I heard mostly good, or really all good, about Cul2vate. So, I was fortunate to get into Cul2vate, and here I am now.

What is your favorite farm to work and why?

I’m gonna say Buxahatchee, aka “Buck-nasty”, if that’s cool to say. I was working out there, I’m learning some new knowledge. We’re building a farm, and it made me kind of push the limits, climbing around up on the tresses and screwing these boards in. And it’s just something new, and it’s good knowledge. So, I’m gonna say Buxahatchee.

What has been exciting about learning how to tend crops? What has been discouraging?

I’m gonna just say the growth, starting from a seed and then watching it grow. I can’t remember what we picked the other day. What was it, turnips or something? I don’t know I could be wrong, I’m new. But just to see how big they were, you know. I got one that was a good size, and then I’ll go down. And then I was just chasing, I got another one that was even bigger. So, you know it’s just cool to see everything grow and just come up from a seed. You know, just kind of like what I’m doing now. I’m growing, you know what I’m saying? So, I’m growing in the Lord, and it’s kind of relatable. And then discouraging? I mean, I’m gonna be real, just getting out two months from prison, I can’t find nothing discouraging because I’m free. I’m outside, and I’m loving it. I’m with good people, and the energy is just awesome. So there’s no discouragement.
